The bodies metabolic rate is its ability to burn calories, if we have a high metabolic rate we burn calories easier and quicker than if we have a slow rate. So we can speed up our metabolic rate to aid in weight loss, put simply the more you move the more calories you burn.
Basal Metabolic rate is accountable for most of the calories we burn, it is our standard calorie burner if you like, without us having to do anything it will burn calories day in and day out. So we know that we are burning calories naturally, but the simple fact is that if we are not that active then we are relying on our natural calorie burner to deal with all our calorie intake.
This is why we need to be active, every move we make with our bodies will burn calories. Basal Metabolic Rate burns most of our calories, approximately two thirds of them, so we have a third of our calorie intake to deal with ourselves. If we consume 2000 calories a day and rely on our natural calorie burner and general everyday movement only, then we will still be left with several hundred calories to burn. If these calories don’t get burned then we will gain weight.
So if we only burn 1500 calories a day from our 2000 then we are going to be left with 500 excess calories everyday, over a month we are looking at a possible 3 to 4 pounds of weight gain. This is why most people gradually put on weight over time.
It is not a complicated solution to solve, just by being more active and burning more calories we can maintain a healthy body weight. By doing exercise and toning our muscles can speed up our metabolic rate as muscle burns calories, but I won’t go into that now as this is the subject of my next post.
Some great more active solutions are Walking, Cycling, Running, swimming and any other kind of aerobic exercise.
